A letter from our Chairperson

A few words from our Chair, Julie Morris, the founder of the Association.

This association was set up to encourage the use of exracehorses as riding animals in 2011.    With the current economic climate and the feedback about abused animals especially the discarded racehorse I decided after an argument with an anti-thoroughbred person to try to set up an organisation to fill a gap in the equestrian calendar.

Years ago the Irish thoroughbred was the show hack, show hunter, show jumper, Eventer, and general riding horse but attitudes changed with the introduction of the warm blood.  So he was discarded to an extent and this organisation wishes to show that the Irish thoroughbred still has a useful place in the general equestrian industry, especially the exracehorse.  I want to dispel the myth that the exracer  cannot change of course he can, if you need to change your career you can as needs must – why not a horse, and like ourselves each individual takes his own time, patience is the name of the game.

When this process has been completed the owner/rider needs an outlet and that is why I created the current competitions after a lot of research and speaking to people, I created a simple assessment of these horses based on their behaviour and everyone from the fun rider to the professional can compete at shows and be proud of their achievement.

The competitions have been running for one year now and the support is increasing daily from both competitors and various gymkhanas and show societies

The association is recognised by the thoroughbred industry, including the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing and racecourses north and south, as well as the horse welfare organisations.

I hope I can count on the show societies to push our cause by holding Racehorse to Riding horse Ireland competitions
